Herbs For Depression
Herbs for depression are easy to find. Not all of them, however, are effective.
The most common herbs for depression are St. John’s Wort (hyperforin), Kava Kava, and Passion Flower. St. John’s Wort is the most commonly recommended of the herbs for depression, and in my experience, it’s also the most effective.
Kava Kava is generally recommended for anxiety, although some depression sufferers who experience anxiety symptoms find the herb helpful. Passion Flower also is usually used for anxiety symptoms but can also be helpful for depression that includes anxiety.
Another known herb for depression is 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), although calling 5-HTP an herb is a bit of a misnomer. 5-HTP is actually an amino acid. But it’s a natural amino acid that’s extracted from the Griffonia simplicifolia plant.
Of all the herbs for depression, St. John’s Wort has the strongest scientific evidence of effectiveness. Clinical studies have demonstrated that St. John’s Wort does relieve depression symptoms. Several studies that compared St. John’s Wort with SSRI depression medicine like Prozac®, and found that St. John’s Wort works just as well as the depression medicine, but with fewer side effects.
I have used both 5-HTP and St. John’s Wort and have found both to be very helpful in relieving depression symptoms. I’ve also taken Kava Kava, which helps me relax and helps me sleep when depression is causing anxiety.
All Natural Antidepressants Vary in Quality
All natural antidepressant like St. John’s Wort and 5-HTP can be found in a wide variety of quality. Be careful when you try any all natural antidepressant. Many herbs for depression products don’t have a dosage large enough to do any good. Also, many all natural antidepression products are of low quality.
When you look for all natural antidepressants, look for products that have proven dosages and are manufactured with high quality control. Sometimes you can find products that combine more than one of the herbs for depression. Combination all natural anti depression products can be quite effective.
