Exercise And Depression

Exercise and depression studies have shown that exercise can be more helpful to people with mild to moderate depression than depression medicine.  Yup, exercise and depression is a connection you need to know about if you want to relieve depression symptoms.

I discovered the connection between exercise and depression quite by accident.  Actually, my wise dog, Muggins, showed me the way.  Muggins insists on her daily walks, whether I’m suffering from the depressive phase of bipolar depression or not.  Because I’m a good dog parent, I force myself to walk even when I don’t want to.

And when I do, I find something amazing happens.  I’m not as depressed when I get my daily walk in.

Now, science is proving what I already knew.  A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that exercise can be more effective than drugs in treating clinical depression that isn’t severe.  The study was done by researchers at Freie University in Berlin.  The researchers discovered that only thirty minutes of exercise a day significantly made a major impact on the moods of people who had been experiencing depression symptoms for over 2/3 of a year

The patients in this study walked on a treadmill.  And even this indoor walking was helpful.

I’ve tried both walking on a treadmill indoors and walking outdoors, and I’ve found that walking outdoors is a lot more effective.  Walking outside is a great way to start the day—far better than caffeine as a good pick-me-up.

The great thing about exercise and depression is that exercise works a lot faster than any depression medicine I’ve tried and any herbs for depression too.  The boost in mood from exercising is immediate.

As a bipolar sufferer, I know that exercise is beneficial.  But if you need proof, another study being conducted by Exeter University's sports science department, is getting it for you.  This study is testing the effect of exercise on people with manic depression, and initial findings indicate that exercise is as helpful for manic depression as it is for clinical depression.

I knew that.  Give exercise a try and find out for yourself the powerful link for improved mood that you’ll find with exercise and depression.
